skater and Hall of Fame inductee. Active during the 1940s, 1970s.

Overview

The life & career

Charlie 'Spec' Saunders was inducted into the National Roller Derby Hall of Fame in 1959. He was a respected skater in the post-war men's game and continued his involvement in the sport long after his playing career, working as a coach and informal mentor — including, by his own account, teaching skating in Redondo Beach and Santa Monica, where future referee Don Lastra was among those who skated and refereed alongside him.

Saunders was associated with the West Coast Jet League and later refereeing networks. The Derby Memoirs archive (family-stewarded) preserves first-person recollections from Don Lastra of his friendship with 'Spec' during the 1960s and 1970s.
